Have you ever found a band that’s out of your normal wheelhouse, but for some reason they are able to grab you and take control? I am sure we all have, that band for me is Mother of Graves. A dark and doom-laden act from Indiana. Doom metal, a subgenre that I tend to overlook for my own reasons. However, Mother of Graves isn’t just your run-of-the-mill doom metal band. The intense melodies and an almost romantic edge make their music so beautiful it’s ugly. A morose and cathartic approach to metal, with vocals that haunt the inner core.
Coming off their mind-blowing sophomore release from 2024 The Periapt Of Absence, which claimed a #11 spot on Decibel Magazine’s Top 40 AOTY and tore through countless year-end lists, my own included, Mother of Graves fine-tuned this metal machine into the best doom metal record I have heard in nearly 3 decades. Mirroring the dismal death of My Dying Bride, and the melodic dissonance of Paradise Lost, this record is their strongest and most versatile to date!
Their latest, The Light That Keeps Us due out on October 16th from Profound Lore, is going to completely blow up everyone’s album of the year lists. Each listen delivers a unique dynamic that is gripping. The content is sublime yet depressing. A morbidly sad record that keeps you battling your own thoughts.
The musicianship is second to none. The production is precise and impeccable. They have polished themselves into a finely coated wax muscle car of dark and forboding content. You know you made it when you get the legendary Dan Swano to appear on your record. Wingless Soul features the legend in all his glory. Caught off guard by the deeply moving cleans, the harsh vocals play the perfect co-pilot to Swano.
Through the Pale of Shade is by far my favorite song on the record. Its hellish, looming chorus bleeding into the slow, syncopated roll of the drums sends chills down your spine. The nightmare toying with your brain is having a field day, and this song is the one that hooked me! My end-of-year Spotify unwrapped will certainly feature this one!
The opening guitars of Eventide Angel is a soliloquy of madness before you are snuffed off this mortal coil. A theatrical funeral hymn that bleeds depth and reflection. The vocals are otherworldly!
One can dissect each song and find the dynamic intricacies that create a haunting soundscape of doom metal majesty; however, if you can only listen to one song, choose The Beggars Allegory. A bipolar track with a tremendous piano piece, a nightmarish riff, then a full-on assault of blackened death metal speed and violence. I caught myself holding my breath at certain parts, as the mood changes often. A mind-blowing and despondent track – truly remarkable.
How does one sum up something that they tried really hard to describe in words? I am torn on whether to submit this review because I don’t think I did The Light That Keeps Us any justice. I don’t feel this way often, but I’m also not succumbed by a records majesty quite like I am with this one. Whether you are into black, death, power or one of the cores, listen to this record. After I finished it, I told my wife, “I just listened to one of the best records of the year.”
