Two decades into their career, Dawn of Demise are still pursuing the same objective that launched the band in the first place: writing heavy, catchy death metal. Whether those early releases fully lived up to that ambition is debatable, but one thing is clear from Feed My Absurdity – their sound has far more in common with the muscular death metal of North America than anything traditionally associated with their native Denmark.

If we’re judging this purely against that mission statement, they’re not far off the mark. Musically, Feed My Absurdity is the equivalent of a clenched fist. Everything feels controlled to within an inch of its life. Tempo shifts, blasts, breakdowns and grooves are deployed with almost mechanical precision. You could just as easily call it surgical. The band move effortlessly between crushing slow passages and bursts of blitzkrieg speed, and they do so in a way that repeatedly makes you nod along and think, “that was good, loved that.”

The problem is that the album rarely leaves a deeper impression beyond that immediate reaction. It settles into a steady-state equilibrium where each song feels assembled from a familiar death metal cookbook. The ingredients are effective, and they’re applied with confidence, but as the record progresses a sense of sameness begins to creep in. That’s not to suggest the material is weak. Far from it. It’s simply that the band’s commitment to discipline occasionally works against them.

The counterargument, of course, is that you still get 39 minutes of solid, reliably heavy death metal. For me, it suffers slightly from being too restrained. I kept waiting for a moment where the band completely cut loose and veered into something genuinely unhinged, but that moment never arrives. Viewed through the simpler lens of “is it heavy?”, the answer is an unequivocal yes. It’s heavy, aggressive and undeniably extreme. Dawn of Demise also deserve credit for consciously avoiding the stereotypical Scandinavian death metal template. After twenty years they clearly know how to write catchy, propulsive riffs, and there’s enough groove running through this record to keep heads moving throughout.

It might not deliver the knockout blow its title suggests, but Feed My Absurdity remains a sturdy and enjoyable slab of death metal that will appeal most to listeners who like their brutality delivered with a strong sense of groove and control.
