For the good part of 2 decades, Suicide Silence are a strong name within the metal scene, solidifying their place amongst deathcore and metal fans as a genre defining band, and they are back with their 7th album “Remember…You Must Die”. This will be the 4th album with Eddie Hermida manning the helm since the passing of Mitch Lucker back in 2012. Since the change, fans have been divisive about the band’s changes in musical style, whether it be the safer approach to their songs in 2014’s “You Can’t Stop Me” or the infamous nu-metal/deathcore mash up that was their self-titled release back in 2017. The band definitely picked up some attention with their previous release “Become The Hunter” but were unfortunately stopped dead in their tracks by the covid pandemic.

Suicide Silence have released several singles to lead up to the release of this album, giving fans an optimistic view that the band may be returning to their original deathcore roots and releasing material more along the lines of “The Cleansing”. Upon listening through, the album has a rawer approach and doesn’t sound as overproduced as previous releases, while still delivering a brutal assault of riffs and blast beats. The song structuring and instrumentation throughout takes me back to the old days of Suicide Silence, while still including a few newer elements to not make it sound like a complete rip-off. Hardcore and black metal-esque elements are added into the mix to give the album an extra bit of flavour. There isn’t anything that stands out too much on this album from previous releases, but that’s what makes Suicide Silence such a household name; their signature sound.

Eddie Hermida’s performance on this sounds more dialled back and more controlled than previous releases. His approach to this record seems a lot more fitting to the Suicide Silence sound that I imagined he was originally desired for in the first place. The former All Shall Perish vocalist has had an uphill battle since taking over from the late Mitch Lucker, a vocalist that has prominently made a shattering impact on the deathcore scene. I have always been a big fan of Eddie’s vocals and the material he’s released with Suicide Silence, but “Remember…You Must Die” is by far his best work to date with the band. He uses his full range effortlessly throughout this record while not giving everything at once, giving listeners something to look forward to and not knowing what Eddie is going to come up with next.

Suicide Silence have come back in force and have comprised an album that will capture the hearts of the fans that fell in love with these guys back in 2007. The complete takeback approach with a few splashes of modern elements has made this a very promising album for Suicide Silence and can hopefully help them reclaim the throne they sat on for many years.
