When we think of France, our brains shift to artistic beauty, Renaissance architecture, and a language so eloquent it’s often described as a language for lovers. Can something be so ugly that it is beautiful? Enter Herald of Dawn, the latest record from death metal stalwarts Morgue. Forming in the late 90s, Mortuary has evolved to this heavyweight death metal act we know today. With grind influences, black metal, eerie vocals and demonic deathlike blast beats, Morgue will satisfy the stingiest of the extreme metal elite.

Herald of Doom is a mixture of all the above put into a gigantic blender, and then you hit start. Its brutal pace but slow drawl vocal delivery is a haunting menace. The vocals are almost an afterlife hellish spoken word. It’s a slow delivery with a nightmarish purpose. Unique and sinister in the darkest way possible.

The record has multiple guests, including Max Otero (Mercyless) and Meynach (Mutiilation) which adds to its mystique. It’s dark beauty creates a rather haunting record that eclipses most of their peers in the modern black metal world.

At 8 tracks spanning a little over 35 minutes, this record feels like a quick listen. There’s so much atmosphere that multiple listens are needed. Each listen growing on you more and more. Each listen creating more of this dark world Morgue has relinquished upon us.

The Abyss I Know is a morose and often frightening song. The ominous and somber atmosphere bleeds out with each moment. The opening riff and drums in To The Bitter End is just pure nastiness. A hostile frenzy of extreme metal prowess beating your ear drums into submission.

Last Supper is pure 2nd-generation black metal at its peak. Brutal and vicious to core. However, if you like your metal insanely heavy, then put on The Deserted Garden of Eden. The riff is unreal! The tone is thick! They ended the album with the most violent and powerful song on the album. You are left clamoring for more!

An album with this much depth and ferocity doesn’t come around often. It’s a hard-hitting uppercut to the chin, the one that puts the lights out. Give this one multiple listens; you’ll discover more each time!

4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)
