One of Copenhagen, Denmark’s best kept secrets of the underground, MajesticMass is back for another spirited dive into metals realm of noteworthy genre blending. The ghoulish vocals, sleazy but seductive fuzzy grooves and spirited punk attitude makes the unconventional Destroys Minds and Rapes Souls downright irresistible. If Kyuss and Venom got together and decided to be a punk rock band, it might sound like this. Sing along style anthems, satanic dark charm, and blood drenched desert rock aura fuel this nightmare.
Majestic Mass is incredibly short, at only six songs twenty-seven minutes, with almost three minutes being an organ filled instrumental. It’s a damn travesty because this little evil savage is a snarling delight. It leaves you wanting more, but not in the way that’s satisfying, but in the way of being frustrating. At least ten more minutes and I would have been totally content. Either way, though, this album still rocks in ways that’s been lost in a lot of music these days and is still well worth your time.
The production on Destroys Minds and Rapes Souls is filthy in the best way. The guitar tone is tightly fuzzed, bass guitar is warm and occasionally distorted with good clarity. The drums sound real, producing a retro sounding thud, while cymbals are crisp and bashing. The (hooded) vocalist’s raspy, growling is level in the mix, letting it all come together cohesively. One complaint I do have, is the guitar tone remains exactly the same throughout, giving it less personality than the rest of the instruments and vocals. A minor gripe, but some tonal variance between rhythms, chords and melodies would have really set things off.
The supercharged punky Covenant (Rapist of the Free Will) sounds like the equivalent of a mohawked corpse painted hooligan at a party just raging. The track is infectious with a fast-building intro bursting into a sawing riff and heavy crashes. It’s impossible to listen to this without body parts bobbing along, even if they’re bloody and don’t belong to you. I don’t want to name-drop other bands when I do reviews, but bands like Majestic Mass are so hard to explain the full picture, I almost have to. With that being said, this track gives me Kvelertak vibes but fuzzier. It’s upbeat, punky, and a total blast to listen to. Delinquent energy for days.
The ridiculously catchy anthem like, I am your Earth groves hard like Clutch with menacing black metal vocals. The chorus line “Fire at Will” will surely be a live setting war cry. I dare anyone to try and make it through this song without being seduced by its hooky swagger. There’s a commanding meditative state about the slithery guitar melodies and full sounding bass line thumping along to a fetching rock beat. It’s captivating and forces your body to move.
As a whole, Destroys Minds and Rapes Souls is a psychedelic kaleidoscope of genres that seem to work well together with the sole purpose of just stomping your head with their undeniable groove. Equally suited for monster stadiums and underground clubs alike, Majestic Mass is an engaging band that somehow manages to mix the dark occult with raucous fun.
