Next up we have the French slamming deathcore quartet that is Kanine with their debut album “Karnage”. Formed in early 2020, just before the pandemic, these 4 friends banded together with their love of heavy music and sub drops to create a 9-track album that is by far one of the heaviest and craziest releases to drop this year so far. Kanine’s initial sound is very similar to the likes of Within Destruction and Acrania, while adding their own signature spin onto the genre. When asked about the upcoming debut release, the band had this to say:

“Karnage is real! This is the first time we have the idea of producing something we want to show to the people. It’s a result of several months of composing all together with the desire to speak about humanity’s condition and society who make almost every worst choice possible. But we also see the force we have together, right in the Covid and quarantine period, we stayed focused on our project, and we wrote an album we can be proud of.”

After getting through the opening track on the album, acting as a build up for what’s to come, the listener is greeted by a complete smash to the senses as “Furie” begins with a crushing riff, accompanied by some head pounding drums and a guttural from the vocalist. These boys aren’t playing around from start to finish on this record, and I love it. Guitarist Alexandre Lorentz and bassist Lucas Eckert definitely have some incredible talent with the riffs that are played throughout the album, as well as the general composition of it all. It’s very easy in slam/deathcore to lose attention due to the songs being predictable or not put together very well, but these songs are fantastic. Gabriel Labeauvie is also an incredibly talented member of this quartet. The drum work on Karnage is something to be admired, bringing everything together with intensity and technicality. These boys might want to keep an eye on him, as his skill will be highly desired in the heavy community. Jason Gerhard’s vocal range and technique is nothing short of incredible. Every blistering scream and guttural is delivered with such intensity and precision to deliver an impact that really makes every song stand out on its own.

Kanine are sure to make some waves with this release, especially with the backing of Lacerated Enemy Records. As far as slamming deathcore albums go, this definitely has the potential to be up there with the bands that are dominating this genre, maybe even surpass a few. All I know is that these boys are going to be a band to keep an eye on.
