Review By: Paul Cairney

Apocalyptic Doom, the second album by Finish Death/Doom trio God Disease, is a bit of a frustrating listen. Following on from their enjoyable 2019 debut, ‘Drifting Towards Inevitable Death’, Apocalyptic Doom essentially takes off from the previous album. Perhaps it is slightly more ‘Doom’, but there is no real growth, which is disappointing.

The disappointed is somewhat tempered by the fact that this is another enjoyable listen – that is, if you are in the mood. God Disease epitomise a mood band, and if you are in the right frame of mind, it hits the sweetest of spots.

A mere 6 songs long, it is less than 39 minutes long, a short album by Doom standards. More hit than miss, the tracks each have elements that impress. The guitar tone has a gentle, almost sludge-like riff throughout. Ilkka Laaksonen’s vocals throughout are throat-wrenchingly addictive, and there are numerous parts in each track that will have a quick flick of the horns.

The riff 3 minutes and 42 seconds in on third track, ‘Remembrance’ is one such moment. Alas, these moments are often sporadic at best, as the initial 3 minutes and 41 seconds are almost Doom by Numbers. This is a shame, because when God Disease get it right, they hit a home run, not quite out of the stadium, but enough for a fan to catch the ball in the stand.

As I said, this album is frustrating. It hints of the band hitting the next level, but I guess we will have to wait for album number 3 for this to happen.
