3 years after the release of their debut album, German band Detraktor return with their new opus, Full Body Stomp

Immediately, and I mean from the opening bars, Detraktor let you know their influences. Sepultura are the band…and vocalist/bassist Boris Pavlov could easily have been a stand-in for the Max-era of the band. What this actually creates is a feeling of relaxation as the album progresses. You are immediately set at ease by a familiar sound. The fact that Boris has moved from guitar duties to the bass is, obviously, entirely coincidental…

In acknowledging the original influence, there is also a subtle hint of Prong in a few of the tracks. To my ears, this is 2 for 2.  I love both those bands! The issue is that Boris does not help the band create their own sound. The fact that he is so similar to other singers is unfortunate, as there are a couple of cracking tracks on this album.

‘Bear Hunt’ is a triumph!  Coming hot on the heels of the lacklustre, opening track, it flies along, complete with the sounds of what may or may not be a disappointed or even slightly pissed off bear!

Throughout Full Body Stomp, the band effortlessly settle into a groove. Alas, this also leads to an album that lacks diversity, a bonus if you like what the boys have on offer, but a bit of a disappointment if you want the album to slap you on the back of the head, encouraging a smile.

Although this reads like I don’t like Full Body Stomp, I do. New drummer, Pablo Cortez, is excellent, driving the tracks along with intensity and a side dish of blast-beat awesomeness. He delivers in a big way.  However, the album struggles to maintain interest on multiple listens. That said, there are a number of individual tracks that give a hint of how decent album no.3 could be.

Full Body Stomp is an album of what could have been. It is definitely worth 41 minutes of your time, but lacks the oomph for multiple repeat listens…well apart from Bear Hunt that is!
