Review By: Mark Waight

Cyan Kicks are a forward-thinking modern pop-rock band with a much sharper and darker edge than most of their genre. I Never Said 4Ever is a statement of empowerment and willingness to discuss once taboo subjects full on in a very upbeat and enjoyable manner.

When given I Never Said 4Ever for review by Metal Epidemic, I thought to myself, this is well outside my comfort zone! On listening to Cyan Kicks with an open mind, I couldn’t help doing anything other than really enjoy listening to I Never Said 4Ever, and often found myself singing along with twelve rather catchy tunes.

I Never Said 4Ever by Cyan Kicks won’t be everybody’s cup of tea but give it a spin, and you might be pleasantly surprised and find yourself a new guilty pleasure. Don’t worry, I won’t say anything!

Cyan Kicks are Susanna (vocals), Leevi (bass), Niila (guitars) and Pietari (drums).

I Should Stop Acting Cool is a short intro that leads into opening song I Never Said 4Ever, which (Cyan) kicks the album off nicely with a super speedy and catchy sing-along song. Hurricane, on the other hand, was a 2022 Eurovision Song Contest entry for Finland and continues their countries tradition to always bring something new and exciting to the table with a very Amaranthe styled offering.

By the time I got to Addicted, I was already hooked-in and really enjoying my musical journey through the fluffier side of Rock. Can’t Get You Out of my Bed is a slightly more restrained track to begin with that speeds up nicely by bringing in a pumping dance rhythm to the fore along with the mandatory catchy sing-along chorus that this album delivers in abundance.

Lost Boi could almost be a club anthem, with more than a glow stick waving flavour to the song’s theme. Slower track Back Ashore has a heavier bass and percussive undertone to deliver a more modern metal orientated feel to the music.

See the Light is an absolutely banging track with an underlying message about the modern world around us, so don’t let the deft touch fool you. By this point you should be well accustomed to the great mix Cyan Kicks have to offer, and as an upbeat track with a darker message, Invincible should be right up your street! Thunderous grooves, cleverly placed electronics and huge chorus to boot!

Into You is a lighter affair with a nice blend of Euro Pop and pure Pop that serves up something with wider commercial appeal. I can totally see why this was released as a single earlier this year.

Unbearable brings us back to the more familiar Pop Rock theme with a slightly more gritty and harder edge to it. Someone Like You was also released as a single to compliment a bevvy of festival appearances and sold-out shows planned for later this year, and commercial success is sure to follow with a track as well executed as this one! Hooks everywhere…

The emotional and heartfelt finale of When You’re Gone, shows that Cyan Kicks are also very capable of delivering a super sweet ballad worthy of radio waves far and wide.

I Never Said 4Ever by Cyan Kicks is very much an album for the summer holidays of 2023 and will sound fabulous lying by the pool or on a beach during a warm and sunny day. I Never Said 4Ever delivers a darker message in a light and enjoyable way, and is sure to be a hit for Cyan Kicks (and they certainly do kick). If you are going on holiday this year, then I Never Said 4Ever is certainly a worthwhile addition to your music playlist, so check it out!
