Migja ta Mohh Mignun is album number 7 by Maltese one-man black metal dude, Saħħar and is the first since 2020s ‘Tiġrif tal-Ġnus’. Sung in his native tongue, it adds a little bit of something different to the norm. This is important. As a modern black metal act, any variation from the usual black metal sound helps it stand out, giving a little added spice to the mix.

The fact is, if it wasn’t for the Maltese vocal, Migja ta Mohh Mignun would nestle firmly in the, ‘just another black metal record’ pile. It is good enough to tick every black metal box. It is heavy on atmospheric elements, creating a haunting and immersive soundscape. It also has a defined concept, ‘chronicling the descent and transformation of a man consumed by insatiable thirst for forbidden knowledge’. It also blends a handful of elements from other genres, including a subtle doom influence.

All this aside, this is a solid slab of black metal. Songs like, ‘L-Għatxan’ has immense black metal riffage, searing satanic images to your soul. ‘L-Antikrist il-Ġdid’ has a genuine dark ominous feeling throughout. However, these 2 tracks bookend the album. In between, we are presented with decent songs, albeit raised above the norm with the native-tongue vocals.

Migja ta Mohh Mignun is not the album that will raise Saħħar to the upper echelons of modern black metal, but it is enough to deserve attention. With nothing actually wrong with the album in itself, it is just a shame it isn’t quite enough to grab you by the crotch and demand you to love it.
