Quicksand have been around for decades, and it’s impossible to overlook their influence on the evolution of post-hardcore. If you’re into the genre and don’t know who Quicksand are, honestly, where the fuck have you been?!?
After releasing two heavy-hitting albums in the ’90s (Slip and Manic Compression), the band imploded and split. Like many artists, they eventually reunited in 2012. A personnel reshuffle in 2018 left them operating as a three-piece until 2021, when Stephen Brodsky of Cave-In joined on guitar and backing vocals.
Bring On The Psychics opens strong with Get To It, delivering that familiar Quicksand sound. Time genuinely disappears when I’m listening to this album. Tracks 1 through 6 are so hooky, riff-driven, and fun that I barely notice that I’m already over half-way through the record. The choruses are catchy and sing-along, the lyrics are on point, and everything just flows so damn smoothly.
Bring On The Psychics maintains a pretty steady tempo until track 7, Days You Run To, where a welcome change of pace kicks in. This one in particular carries the mood and texture of something you’d find on Fugazi’s The Argument, which is in no way a bad thing, everyone loves a wee bit of Fugazi!
If I’m being super critical, I have a couple of very minor gripes. The “solo” in track 9, “Moving Forward”, doesn’t quite work for my ear, it feels a little simple and out of place for some reason. And while final track “Bring On the Psychics” is a great track, it doesn’t feel like an album closer. I’d have loved something more colossal or experimental to finish the album instead of another (admittedly great), standard Quicksand track.
I really love how several of the tracks here feel like they could slot straight into a Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater soundtrack, high-energy, melodic, and effortlessly cool. It really gave me a nostalgia bomb that I wasn’t expecting.
Overall, this album is an absolute summer banger. If you’re looking for an easy, uplifting listen on a warm day, this shit has you covered. It’s perfect for blasting in the car with the windows down, for a party vibe, or even when you are training. I’ve already spun it multiple times when I want 32 minutes of fun, high-energy music.
Let’s face it, Bring On The Psychics isn’t reinventing the wheel, and at this point in their career, Quicksand clearly aren’t trying to & why the fuck should they?!? It IS however, a fantastic record, and I’m sure I’ll be spinning it all summer and beyond.
Maybe you will, too. Enjoy.
