Canadian progressive death metal band Gutvoid is set to release their sophomore full length on 20 March 2026. Comprised of guitarist Daniel Bonofiglio, guitarist/vocalist Brendan Dean, bassist Justin Boehm, and drummer D.W. Lee, Gutvoid creates soundscapes that fully immerse the listener into a bleak world of doom-laden dissonance and mind-expanding atmospherics.

There is a lot going on in these songs, so Liminal Shrines takes repeat listens to fully appreciate. Ruinous Gateways kicks things off with three minutes of instrumental brooding before Spell Reliquary lumbers in with the glacial weight of bands like Incantation or Mortiferum. Smothering Sea sees Gutvoid begin with a mid-paced march before transitioning into a dissonant onslaught of angular riffing. The second half of the album, made up of Umbriel’s Door, Lead Me Beyond the Sleeping I, and Chasm of Displaced Souls, continue Gutvoid’s descent into cavernous dissonant extremity. The latter two songs are noteworthy for their length, clocking in at 11:56 and 12:05 respectively. The extended runtimes of these songs provide Gutvoid with plenty of space to fully explore their suffocating atmospheres of warped brutality.

Gutvoid’s second full length is the first half of a two-album concept, so I am extremely excited to see where the second half leads them. Fans of thought-provoking death metal that challenges as much as it crushes will find much to love on Liminal Shrouds.
