Review By: Eric Wilt
With their sophomore release In Penitence and Ruin, Tribunal continue to chart a singular path through the sepulchral halls of gothic doom. The band weaves together a dense tapestry of contrasting textures: haunting organ and mournful cello flow beneath towering, distorted guitars; ethereal female vocals juxtapose cavernous death growls; and relentless double bass drumming drives the whole thing forward like a funeral procession picking up speed.
Tribunal’s strength lies in their ability to marry beauty and brutality without diminishing either. Tracks like Incardine and Armoured in Shadow are masterclasses in contrast, moving from moments of haunting elegance to wrenching despair with a kind of grim grace. These compositions showcase the band’s knack for sculpting chaos into something both harrowing and hypnotic—agonized cacophonies that feel deliberate and deeply felt.
While this particular strain of sonic gloom isn’t my personal go-to, it’s impossible to deny the craft and cohesion on display here. In Penitence and Ruin is a focused, fully realized vision—a bleak and beautiful monument to sorrow.
