One of the best kept secrets in death metal is Nuclear Winter Records from Athens, Greece. I stumbled across them last year and realized that just about every album they release is a gem. My favorite Nuclear Winter band so far has been Rotten Tomb, who is primed to release their latest full-length Vestiges of Tortured Souls on 6 June. Rotten Tomb hails from Chile and play death metal the way it’s meant to be played: heavy, bludgeoning, and devastating.

Taking their cue from old school death metal bands like Bolt Thrower, Autopsy, and Incantation, Rotten Tomb plays songs that race with blast beats one minute and groove with a slowed down tempo the next. The vocals are a tortured growl, and the lead work is precise and inspired. Standout tracks like Condemned Reality and Mortified show a band that can go toe to toe with any of the more well-known death metal revival bands like Frozen Soul, Gatecreeper, Creeping Death, and Necrot that are getting more of attention than their Chilean peers.

Rotten Tomb is one of the better death metal bands going these days, but most fans don’t know it yet. Here’s to hoping Vestiges of Tortured Souls finally gets them the recognition they deserve.

4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)
