Sweden and death metal go together like peanut butter and jelly…ok I am sorry this is a death metal record review. Allow me to change that. Sweden and death metal go together like blood and guts. The chainsaw grinding guitars, still prevalent in its modern form is what made Swedish death metal so recognizable. Modern production has made that grinding sound thicker and heavier.
Each genre has had its “hey day” so to speak. There was the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, there was the grunge sound of Seattle. Like most things, their time in the light was short lived. However, Swedish death metal since its inception has still curb stomped the rest of the world. 40 years later, Swedish death metal is still basking in all of its glory!
Revel in Flesh, not rookies to the scene, are dropping a metaphorical bomb on the world on September 18, with their newest record on War Anthem records Flesh For the Kult of Death. A knockout punch to the chin, this record revisits their roots. A true to form, heavy and volatile death metal record. No frills, no reinvention of the wheel. Just a pure death metal record, following the blueprint the OG’s bestowed upon us.
In what will be one of the heaviest records of 2026, this record checks all the boxes! When hearing the blood curdling vocals of Ralf Hauber intertwined with the relentless onslaught of Erik Barthold behind the drums, you can’t but help to hear the classic Grave and Dismember influences. The influence is littered throughout the song Bodybag Inferno. A blast from the past sound modernized and laying to waste our eardrums.
The horror story tales of The Graverobber and Pool of Blood remind you just exactly what you are listening to. Severely sick Swedish death metal. Pool of Blood hands down is the best song on the record. It’s bone chilling and just an all out assault! Once again, just like the OG’s intended!
Hellhole and Tombstalker are Richter scale tickling motherfuckers! Intensely heavy, and violent to the core, the middle portion of this record is sludgy swamp like homicide! Go ahead, turn it up, rattle the windows!
The treat, is the Crowbar cover! All I Had (I Gave) from their legendary self titled masterpiece. Hearing a song that was already sickening heavy made even heavier is priceless. Covering something like this song would be a risk for most bands. It’s a classic, something most wouldn’t try. However, Revel in Flesh said fuck it, listen to this and made this song their own! Bravo!!
I will never tire of Swedish death metal. There’s so much to love about the music. But every once in a while you hear something like Flesh For The Kult of Death and you are reminded that Sweden is arguably the home of death metal. Revel in Flesh welcome you in with a smile, but be careful, they will clench your throat, and not once let up.
