After receiving the new Rage album, A NEW WORLD RISING, to review, one question immediately came to mind: WHY HAVE I NEVER HEARD OF THESE GUYS IN THE PAST 40 YEARS!?!? Holy schnikes! I am absolutely blown away and slightly embarassed that they have never come across my radar in the past because they are FAN-FUCKING-TASTIC!

Formed in 1984 (You heard me: 1984!) in Germany, Rage has released over 25 albums and gone through numerous line-up changes. The one constant being bassist/vocalist, Peavy Wagner. Wagner is a powerhouse as a singer and has written a fantastic catalogue of songs throughout the years. Combining elements of power metal, progressive and classical influences, each Rage album stands as testaments of all the best things about heavy metal.

A NEW WORLD RISING is a bit of a concept album, with songs warning of the possible dystopian future that possibly awaits mankind if we continue down the path we seem to be set upon. The album is a literal juggernaut of a sonic hurricane. From start to finish, Rage never lets up with its assault on your brain and ears. Two stand out tracks, ‘Innovation’ and ‘Straight to Hell ’25’ should propel this record onto Top of the Year lists in a perfect world.

Starting as a trio, oh those many years ago, today Rage stands as a 4-piece and what a difference that extra guitar makes in their overall sound. Guitarists Stefan Weber and Jean Bormann play together and against one another like a well-oiled machine. But, the MVP has to be drummer Vassilios “Lucky” Maniatopolous. The man is an absolute beast behind the kit.

In a nutshell? A NEW WORLD RISING should break this band into the big leagues. They have put in the miles and the years. They have paid their dues. And, they have released probably the best record of their career.

5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)
