The End Of The Night is the colossal opening blast from them. I have to warn you that this doesn’t start with an explosion, rather it’s an almost tense arrangement that uses silence to further its effect. When they do come in, it’s incredibly effective as they wrap the song up in a way that is a million miles away from its start. I loved this, the slow building instead of just dropping you straight in. And speaking of straight in, The Judge comes next, with a sound that I can only describe as being brick like. Let me explain – it’s a dense sound where they have crafted a noise that is compact as it is dense. Just as you think you have a handle on them, they change it round, switching before returning to its starting riff. When you listen to this, its tight and unafraid of dropping light into its moments of shade. I think they describe it as monolithic, and they may be right.
Forking Paths has a larger sonic footprint despite its early restrained sound, its oppressive, and then it kicks over in order to shake itself awake. This pulled-back sound gives you chance to breathe and regroup, at least until the expected kick in. Chimera doesn’t wait; a sole purpose is to drop a monumental piece of heavy our way. The simple build works in its favour; its direct and forward approach is just the thing to ready us for the final push to the end. Don’t be mistaken that they don’t allow any melody to slip in here. It’s there, tightly controlled, but it’s there.
As they start The Spectacle they are warmed up and now rolling with a steady push of riffs and mixed vocal deliveries that only add to it’s frenzied manner. What hasn’t changed is how big it sounds, and the album is running now. The Augur looks back to the start, this time using that calm approach from Forking Paths instead of silence that is punctured, but that gradual, slow burn building is on display. Then, all systems go. A repeated melodic line and some of the harshest vocals recorded usher this song into its final moments. Its 8 minutes of quality, and a massive closing statement for the band to have. Each of the tracks here have their own moment in the sun, each are consistent and achieve/maintain a level of quality from start to finish. This is their 4th album, their first in a decade and its one that orbits around doom/sludge whilst not constraining itself with that sound. It is a very good album, one that I believe is an echo of what came before. Its one that stands tall as one of the releases of the year so far for me.
