Madrid’s dissonant black metal legion Aversio Humanitatis hits like a barrage of hammers thrown from the top of a building. I was not entirely aware of this band until I choose this album based on the one single I heard. Holy hell am I glad I did too, with a crushing mix of dissonance, furious black metal and the gnarly weightiness of death metal, the bands third full length album To Become The Endless Static is a nasty, malignant burst of concussive force. The swarming melodies and dystopian riffs are an overwhelming wave of blurring noise that is both deeply suffocating yet discernible. A potent mix of darkly layered ugliness resembling both Panzerfaust and Behemoth for those who need a reference point. Aversio Humanitatis while sounding familiar is undoubtedly unique in the way their songs are written as well as they are presented. Each track is abnormally satisfying in a droning, unrelenting kind of way. It gets under your skin and penetrates your sub conscious as if it were enslaving your body to do its bidding. To Become The Endless Static being released by Debemur Morti Productions feels like an appropriate title as its engulfing nature will devour you effortlessly.
The disheartening soundscape of opener Long Stretch the Shadows rapidly punishes you with blast beats, searing tremolo guitars, and growly, shouty rasp that are reminiscent of Nergal. The songs wicked melodies writhe their way through the battering of its chaos. At first listen it sounds cluttered with thick suffocating dissonance, but by the end you will have absorbed it enough to comprehend the frightening truth, that its shadowy figure is merely showing on the surface what it chooses to show. Each track has this singular quality despite the album having varying passages with dramatic rhythmic progressions. There is however some breathing room from its dark emotional power. Maybe the equivalent of an inch’s worth of water before you’re fully submerged. That’s enough right.
Blackened Mold Marrow starts with a whirlwind of twisting guitars leading to cavernous torment. The hellfire fuelled track is overwhelmingly dense with discordance relentlessly stirring its havoc about, it creates an uneasiness that genuinely sticks with you. The percussive power of both the drum blasting and the creepy melody accents are utterly abusive. The middle parts of the track have memorable riff patterns which adds a stylistic groove to what is already a tortured soundscape.
Weaving in multiple threads of density Strange Angles chokes and annihilates with its slower moving gloom. The drums keep a steady pace while the guitars float and spider their way around loosely. This track feels especially abyssal as if you were the last person on earth breathing. The claustrophobic elements are enhanced by a middle section of crushing waves of discordance and harsh vocals before reaching its slithering, airy, visceral end.
To Become The Endless Static grows more rewarding each and every time you divulge in its sins, clocking in at a lean 33 minutes the band wastes little time with filler or unneeded reflection. The production is surprisingly good for how densely this record is written. To me this sounds like a journey filled experience, one that guides you into the depths of hell to never return.
Most importantly, Aversio Humanitatis is a band that everyone should be aware of. If you like black metal or blackened death metal, and you’re not already familiar, get this in your ear and find out what slow putrescence sounds like.
