I always feel like the albums released in the last couple weeks of the year get lost in the proverbial shuffle, but now it’s 2026, and Everlasting Spew Records is primed to enter the new year in a big way. Their first release of the year is from Alabama death metal band Ectovoid and is called In Unreality’s Coffin. On this, their third full length, Ectovoid deliver everything you’d want from a death metal album. It’s dark, heavy, and pummeling, and is easily one of the best albums of the young year.
Surprisingly, this is the first time I’ve heard of Ectovoid, though they’ve released two previous full lengths as well as a handful of demos and splits. I’m guessing that many people are, like me, just being introduced to them, but I don’t think the band will exist in anonymity for much longer. In Unreality’s Coffin is full of sick riffs, bludgeoning drums, and nasty vocals that place them on a level with any of the more well-known bands in the genre.
In the end, Ectovoid is here to stake their claim in the world of death metal. In Unreality’s Coffin is full of death metal written with conviction and purpose. For fans of death metal that value atmosphere, savagery, and songwriting, this is an early release that demands attention and repeated listens.
