Septem” is the upcoming debut album from Puerto Rico based, doom infused progressive metal band, Moths. Following up on from their three existing EPs (the self-titled 2018 debut “Moths”, 2022s highly acclaimed “Space force” and a split release with The Stone Eye from 2020) “Septem” continues the bands tendency to constantly evolve and hone rather than sticking to any specific genre.

Moths are Mariel Viruet (vocals), Weslie Negron (bass), Jonathan Miranda (lead guitar), Omar Gonzalez (rhythm guitar) and Daniel Figuero (drums).

The devil will apparently always find mischief for idle hands, and to kick things off in this case he has found “Sloth” for us, a short acoustic instrumental tune to get the show on the road. If you find happiness in other people’s misfortune, then dark progressive rock track “Envy” with its beautiful gothic jazz undertones is surely going to turn you green from head to toe.

Heavy hard-hitting track “Greed” certainly possess’ much more than a good rock song ever needs with its Siouxsie Sioux style vocals and brutally thumping deathly black riff. Next up, the deadliest and most devastatingly demonic of all sins will burst your ears with total “Pride” due to some devilishly satanic and Sabbathesque guitar playing alongside a fabulously futuristic twist.

If you, like me, always have an intense longing for a darn good rock song then you will be instantly intoxicated by “Lust”, a bleak doom fest where the alluring siren like vocals tempt you to distraction before ensnaring you in their demonic grip. Scourge of the modern world, the growling and guttural “Gluttony” mirrors the world in which we now all live with a faster, heavier and deliciously overindulgent track with occasional and brief lighter moments that perfectly mimic our hectic society.

What better way to finish things off than with the unhinged and uncontrolled anger of the violent vengeance seeking sin of sheer “Wrath.” This ranting ‘n’ raging cocktail of wailing, haunting and brutal vocals will leave you quivering and quaking in the corner like a blubbering mess.

There may well only be seven deadly sins up to now, but listening to Moth’s excellent new album “Septem” could almost certainly become another one. In fact, it should probably come with its own get out of hell free card as part of the package, just in case! So, if you’re a habitual sinner looking for absolution or a big fan of Modern Progressive Doom Metal, then “Septem” could be just what your exorcist ordered as Moths show you the righteous path to rehabilitation and redemption. Recommended.
