Short, not sweet, and chock-full of gore, Disembodiment’s debut full length is a breath of stale air for death metal fans who are looking for something to scratch that death-doom itch. The first thing I notice with this album is it plays much quieter than other albums being released these days. I’m not sure if this is a stylistic choice, to make it sound as lo-fi as possible, or if it’s due to the quality of the advance copy of the album I received. Either way, the lo-fi sound gives the album a definite old-school feel, but I like modern albums to sound modern. Besides this, the music is quite enjoyable.
Disembodiment released an EP in 2021 that showcased their penchant for writing songs that walk the line between furious death metal and mid-paced death-doom. While none of the songs from the EP appear on Spiral Crypts, the stylistic choices remain the same. On their first full-length, Disembodiment strikes an effective balance between the crushing weight of doom and the ferocity of death metal. While songs like Morbid Infestation and Infected to Rot lean heavily into the brutality of old-school death metal, the band never strays to far from the crushing atmospherics of doom metal as can be witnessed in songs like Spiral Crypts and Unknown Origins.
With Spiral Crypts, Disembodiment has delivered a debut that incorporates the best of death metal and doom into one tasty package. It’s not flashy or polished, but this rawness suits their murky, oppressive sound. Fans of Incantation, Mortiferum, and Void Rot will find much to dig into on this album.
