Blackened speed and blackened thrash metal are two of the most fun genres out there, because they embrace the simplicity of being a metal fan: beer, fast riffs, and pure headbanging fun. Most bands who embrace this genre do it well, because it’s really hard to fuck it up. Türböwitch are another of these groups – there’s nothing innovative or fresh here, but there doesn’t need to be. Under Haunted Skies is a great album to sit and crack a beer or four with, and anyone who finds any shred of enjoyment in dumb, sleazy riffs will find lots to enjoy here.

While Under Haunted Skies is by no means perfection, there’s still a good bit to like here. The bass, for example, sounds utterly phenomenal, and brings that really filthy sound that contemporaries like Bewitcher and Demiser wallow in. Markolab, the first proper track, is a real highlight, too. It sets the tone for the album, and from the word go Türböwitch are out to drink beer, crank hogs, and have a good, sleazy time. Other moments like Highways of Death (I love when bands make motorcycle noises with guitars) and Moshpit At the End of the Day embody what Türböwitch does best, and while it’s not anything you haven’t heard before, it doesn’t need to be. Under Haunted Skies is, at its core, a fun riffy speed metal strike, and there’s nothing inherently wrong with this record.

Which is also the main problem. Türböwitch, while fun, is quite literally a dime a dozen. In a month where the best band in this style, Hellripper, is releasing a new record, it takes a lot to even come close to the GOAT of blackened speed metal, and Türböwitch doesn’t do that. Türböwitch are more the rowdy local opener that you have fun and mosh hard to, rather than being the reason you came to the show, and honestly, that’s ok. I enjoy Under Haunted Skies, and while I don’t love it because of how bog-standard it is, I’m still going to throw this on while having some beers with the boys, and that’s really the ultimate benchmark of an album in this sound, right? If it ain’t worth having beers to, it’s not worth your time, and Türböwitch are worth your time. Just don’t go in expecting anything paradigm-shifting, because Under Haunted Skies is not that.

3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)
