Skogskult hails from Umeå, Sweden, and emerged onto the metal scene in 2022. This quartet has been busy crafting their sound which draws inspiration from heavyweights like Sleep, Electric Wizard, Monolord, and Telekinetic Yeti. No need for a fancy album title when your music is this heavy, and this self-titled release establishes Skogskult as a group whose sound is commanding and immersive.

Skogskult delivers a powerful experience, drawing listeners into a world shrouded in mystery and ritual. The band weaves themes of occult gatherings, Norse ceremonies, and the legends of Skinwalkers throughout, offering more than just music—it’s an invitation to another world and time. The album’s atmosphere is both captivating and unsettling, reflecting a deep reverence for Nordic folklore and mysticism. Each song on Skogskult stretches out like an epic tale, unhurried and deliberate. The tracks are long and winding, allowing each riff and melody to breathe. This sprawling structure serves Skogskult’s purpose: you’re not simply listening to songs, but sitting around a crackling fire as elders recount tales of long-lost rituals and supernatural encounters. The music’s length isn’t indulgent—it’s essential, mirroring the storytelling traditions that inspire the album’s themes. Musically, Skogskult channels heavy, droning doom metal. Each song is carefully crafted and dynamic, never settling into monotony. The weight and mood recall bands like YOB and Conan; there’s a similar sense of crushing, emotional heaviness. Throughout this work, the energy surges and recedes, painting a dark, mysterious tapestry that feels both ancient and alive. The vocals are in Swedish and, for folks who don’t speak this language, add a unique and immersive dimension to Skogskult. The emotion and power in the delivery transcends any language barrier. The use of the band’s mother tongue anchors the music in its roots and deepens the sense of place, making the tales feel even more authentic and mysterious.

The album’s production is a standout feature. Skogskult achieves an organic and fuzzy sound, lending warmth and authenticity to this work. The mix is balanced, giving space to each instrument while emphasizing the sheer heaviness at the album’s core. There’s a raw energy here that matches the band’s themes perfectly—nothing feels overproduced or artificial. The result is an immersive listening experience that invites you to lose yourself in Skogskult’s ritualistic world.

This self-titled release from Skogskult isn’t just a collection of songs—it’s a journey through shadows, rituals, and old stories brought to life through doom metal. The expansive, lengthy tracks serve as vehicles for storytelling, while the heavy, dynamic musicianship keeps you engaged from start to finish. The organic sound, Swedish vocals, and thoughtful production create an immersive experience that feels both ancient and immediate. For fans of doom, stoner metal, or anyone seeking something deeply atmospheric and emotionally resonant, Skogskult is a must-listen.
