Italian brutal death metal veterans Putridity return with their fourth full-length slab of sonic violence, Morbid Ataraxia, out 27 June 2025. True to their name and legacy, the band continues to churn out some of the most punishing material the genre has to offer. From the opening seconds, the listener is dropped headfirst into a relentless barrage of blistering riffs, cavernous growls, and nonstop blast beats. The drum tone is massive, with each bass blast landing like a cinder block to the chest, while the overall production strikes a solid balance between clarity and chaos.

Musically, Morbid Ataraxia wastes no time with nuance. Guitar work is fast, precise, and often peppered with piercing pinch harmonics, while the vocals remain lodged firmly in the depths of guttural extremity. While the lyrics aren’t front and center, the band’s stated theme—the “oxymoronic nature of humanity”—adds a welcome layer of philosophical grime to the otherwise carnivorous proceedings.

That said, Morbid Ataraxia rarely strays from the brutal death metal blueprint. For genre diehards, that’s a selling point. But for those who crave shifts in tone or mood, the album’s unwavering intensity can feel a bit one-note. Still, there’s no denying the sheer technical force and commitment on display. Putridity may not be reinventing the wheel, but they’re absolutely pulverizing it, and fans of the genre will find much to enjoy in the eight tracks contained within.
