Review By: Eric Wilt

Discovering a new band is always exciting and, having formed in 2024, Bristol’s Plague Pit is about as new as they come. Their first offering is a four song EP called A Whispered Curse, which will be released on 3 October. On A Whispered Curse, Plague Pit plays a brand of ferociously heavy hardcore with death metal attitude. Their blend of brutal riffing, intense breakdowns, and furious vocals will appeal to fans of other hardcore/death metal crossover bands such as Terminal Nation, Baron, and Maul. While Plague Pit doesn’t utilize blast beats the way these three bands do, they definitely scratch the same itch with their powerful chugging riffs, huge breakdowns, and heavy gutturals.

Musically, Plague Pit has turned in four catchy songs that get in, get out, and leave a swath of destruction in their path. While they dabble in esoteric atmospherics at end of Womb of Orchids and A Whispered Curse, the songs themselves are the real stars, and I could really take or leave the outros on these two tracks.

Plague Pit has been around for a relatively short amount of time, and the EP they’ve produced is indicative of the potential this Bristol band shows. While they have the hardcore elements down cold, I expect to see more from the death metal side of things on their future releases, and, quite honestly, I’m here for it. Plague Pit is definitely a band to watch.

3.5 out of 5 stars (3.5 / 5)
