“UK extreme metal collective Outergods are set to unleash their new album Dethroned & Devoured on June 13th, 2025, through Apocalyptic Witchcraft. Merging blackened death metal with chaotic industrial textures, the band delivers a record as suffocating as it is exhilarating.”
Extreme metal as a genre is one that I think confuses people, is it death metal, black metal, grindcore or technical? And the answer is yes. I know, I know, you could see that coming a mile away, but seriously extreme metal can literally be any type of metal if presented in a certain way and insanely amped up. So hopefully you leave this review knowing exactly what this band is about. There’s a lot of adjectives that will be thrown around, please realize this does not mean the band is all over the place. There’s absolutely a unified, cohesive chaos that applies to this record. It also means that I use adjectives entirely too much. Ok Jokes aside.
Firstly, Dethroned & Devoured is chock-full of beasting hellfire, intensely jagged riffs, ridiculous speeds, and unrelenting brutality. Secondly, the musicianship is top-notch with technical prowess at every level while still having a real sense of hooks and cohesive songs. Albeit savage ones.
Mortal Gateway is a blistering, sneering assault on the senses. An unrelenting freight train from hell aimed right between your eyes for a kill shot. It’s blackened in flavour but delivers more like a thrash metal beating. Out of control chaotic riffs, insanely fast drums and vocals that are about as ghastly as a seething, ranting demon coming through the speaker like you’re about to be possessed. An underlying guitar groove rears its head just enough to ensure your neck is getting a proper stretching while utter mayhem is happening all around you.
Sprawling Chaos is no different in speedy induced brutality, except it’s a little more punk influenced with some hardcore style added in for good measure. Just pure ugly nastiness of puked out vocals, deranged guitars and drums that are trying to cave in your chest. Fully accented by a ripping guitar solo that’s pure fucking metal. Quick and to the point, this less than three minute track burns with white-hot intensity and despite its slight change in genre styles is no less brutal. It still sounds like the same band trying to murder you sonically.
Outergods may not be rewriting the extreme metal genre, but holy fuck is this a goddamned kick to the face. The band does an excellent job of floating around genres with undertones of industrial elements, synths and tons of suffocating atmosphere while still sounding musically connected and utterly bloodthirsty. The production is solid enough to not detract from the record, but at times it’s a little uneven and hazy. Some tracks that have a little more going on in them are a little less impactful. Honestly, nothing to really complain about, it’s more an observation. Best example is the guitars sound like they’re going to rip through your flesh on most of the album and then on songs like Origin and Phantasm, they sound more subdued in the mix. For my money, though, Dethroned & Devoured is a total fucking banger from front to back in the truest sense of the word. This is a sick record if you’re looking for some violence. Easy recommend.
