I think, in all honesty, that even before you press play on this, you should know exactly what you are letting yourself in for. You just have to look at the songs themselves, and those alone should conjure up enough nightmarish images to go along with the sheer brutality that Lust of Decay unfurl like a blood splattered tablecloth.
Entombed in Sewage is their 4th full length release, their first since 2006. I’m not going to get into the whys and wherefores because that is really boring, so instead let’s dive straight into the aural depravity and go from there.
So, it is exactly as promised. Unflinchingly brutal from start to finish, with no airs, graces or slow thoughtful moments where they look inwardly and reflect. This is just brutal death metal for fans of brutal death metal. Trying to describe it would not be accurate, but if you imagine that it’s like they’re strangling the life out of their instruments in order to get to a Zen state of viciousness which they attain on each song. The problem with this is that once you get past Parasitic Exsanguination (a mighty opening discharge) the following tracks fall in with a similar pitch and ultimately sound like the one before. This does mean that they blur into one another, at least to me. This isn’t to say that the actual music isn’t any good. Far from it, they serve up all of the necessary constituents required to make an effective death metal album, one that comes 25 years into their career.
How this will land with you is entirely dependent upon how you like your extreme metal. From a brutality standpoint, this is as vicious as it gets. It’s dark, super dense and never slows down. There aren’t any wasted moments, each track is here because it is the best they can do at this point in time and shows that they know how to wring the most out of a single idea. On the flip side, if you are looking for a little variety, possibly some lighter material, then this is not the place. Give it a go, you could be pleasantly surprised.
