Deathcore dwellers, Larcenia Roe, are set to drop their highly anticipated LP Extraction on May 16, 2025. These guys have an insanely unique sound without sacrificing heaviness or brutality, and I don’t see them get talked about enough. Through the use of unusual sounds and a unique cadence, they bring an uneasiness to their version of deathcore, helping them bring something new and fresh to the table! Extraction is set to drop on May 16 this year through Unique Leader Records, and is produced by founding members Ryan Vail and Henry Koster performing vocals and guitar respectively! I am excited to get into what they have cooked up, so let’s dive in!
First track, Teeth, starts off with radio static over an eerie voice saying:
“I love good whispers, show me your teeth”
before shifting into sinister and guttural vocals from Ryan. Being a short introduction track, it ultimately set the tone going forward with the entire album. Second track Calcium Closet featuring Alex Koehler (previously from Chelsea Grin, and currently with Ameonna), starts off with Koehler saying:
“In my heart, In my soul
I’ve done things that you don’t know”
instantly grabbing the listener by the throat and preparing them for a ride. Calcium Closet is filled with heavy riffs, an assault of drums, and a back and forth between Koehler and Vail. Calcium Closet is one of my favorite tracks on the album!
Eggy Mess feat. Vulvodynia starts off quick, punchy, and in your face. Straight out of the gate, Ryan Vail shows you his chops and gets right down to business. As one of the first singles, this was a great choice to get the fans ready for a new offering. Coming off the heels of a new Vulvodynia album, it only made sense to include Lwandile Prusent on the track. Eggy Mess starts and ends so fast, you hardly have time to realize what happened, but you know you enjoyed yourself. Carolina Crowd Killer is absolute monster of a track, heavily showcasing Ryan’s vocal range; with drums and breakdowns that are sure to start massive pits, this track is bound to deliver well during live sets! The inclusion of Filth solidifies this as another fantastic track.
Lip Split is hands down one of the best tracks on the album. Hot cross buns on a recorder playing before some of the nastiest drums and guitar riffs I’ve heard so far is just deathcore perfection. The track continues with a consistency that fans will appreciate, and the heaviness doesn’t let up even through two more breakdowns. Flesh and Brine is a fast-paced death spiral. It feels like a merry-go-round that is spinning faster and faster until you can’t hold on anymore. The track is fantastic and blends seamlessly with the structure and tracks up to this point.
Cary Ain’t No Raleigh feels like a blend between hard rap with a deathcore twist. The track as a whole is a nice change of pace from the rest of the album, and just a “bouncier” track in general. With the disc scratches side by side the low gutturals and heavy breakdown, Cary Ain’t No Raleigh should make for a fun live track! The final track, Lullaby, was the epitome of discomfort and heaviness combined in my opinion. This track started off creepy, and continued to make the hair on my neck stand up as it continued. The blend of heaviness, delightfully disgusting vocal delivery, and ambient sounds was a perfect ending to a great album!
In an age where MySpace deathcore is being revived, it can be hard for a deathcore band to stick out as unique, but Larcenia Roe have managed to blend their horror elements with a quality sounding deathcore that works and elevates them. If you enjoy straight, face-melting deathcore along with sounds that will make you pleasingly uncomfortable, and enjoy quality production, then check out Extraction by Larcenia Roe dropping this Friday, May 16!
