After releasing or severely teasing (however you see it) a couple killer EPs in 2021’s Stereo Homicide and Over the Top in 2022, Belgium’s hyper energetic, brutal death metal bringers Coffin Feeder are about to decisively gorge everyone will their flesh exploding debut album, Big Trouble unleashed via Listenable records April 25, 2025.

This ferocious extreme metal congregation brings together veteran members from Belgium’s respective metal and hardcore scenes. Aborted, Leng Tch’e, When plagues Collide and Fleddy Melculy all blended into one nasty amalgamation of bloodcurdling extreme metal where death, groove, grind, and core are each equally and hellishly represented. Despite all hailing from the same country, the band members come from three separates regions, and each speak their own dialect, resulting in this ugly beast of a record being in English as an easier way to communicate with one another. Not that it even matters, audible violence translates perfectly in every language. Just wanted to share what I thought was an interesting little morsel from the press release. Please continue.

Right off the bat, judging from the cover, and the obviously cool song titles we are in for a high octane, campy, fun ride full of tributes and influence from popular culture that we grew up with. The likes of Commando, John Carpenter, Gremlins, Predator and Conan the Barbarian just to name a few. This alone makes for at least a curiosity listen. Metal nerds unite.

After a brief 56-second sample taken from the classic cyberpunk martial arts movie “Cyborg”, we are immediately obliterated with The Jack Burton approved Porkchop Express featuring Julian Truchan (Benighted) on guest vocals. Sven and Julian together employing sickening gutturals, serpent like screams and coarse growls over tech death style chaos, and metallic hardcore breakdowns is nothing short of pure savagery. Relentlessly punishing and groove filled, it’s easy to see why this was chosen as the first single. Fucking intense brutality.

The slightly darker Love at First Death cleverly brings the black metal influence, which gives much needed atmospheric layering to the over the top, chaotic nature of the track. Huge grooves, pick rakes, and squeals, from guitarists Jeroen and Bart as well as the insane drumming from Seib are enhanced with the blackened vibes. There’s an extra screechy nastiness from the background vocals on this track, which reminds me a little of Travis Ryan (Cattle Decapitation). Needless to say, with the musicians in Coffin Feeder, you are truly getting a macabre mix of stylings all with one goal of destroying everything.

The hooky harmonic acrobatics mixed with stompy as hell drums make Get to the Party a total blast of chuggy, blistering death metal fun. While the eeriness heaviness of H.I.S.S brings sinister atmospheric elements in that bring variance in the overall soundscape. There’s already a ton of personality filled extreme metal that’s blood splattered throughout the whole record, but these darkened touches add a lot to it. It’s more suited as an interlude rather than a full track but throw in a Cobra Commander sound bite, and you have my full attention.

For me personally, though, the shining jewel of outright apocalyptic nightmare fuel is A Good Day to Die. Huge bendy riffs, Jans heavy lumbering bass and creep filled background synths bring an end of the world type of feel to this track. Utterly crushing in scope, it ends much too quickly, but its impact is undeniable.

From top to bottom, Big Trouble is about as heavy, ferocious, and gnarly as any band can get. The slams, breakdowns, incredible harsh vocals, and pure insane memorability make this an instant winner when you need something destructive, brutal, and intensely fun. Regardless of what genre you like the most, if it’s extreme metal that you want, Coffin Feeder delivers the goods.
