Blood Red Throne has been a lesson in consistency since just after the turn of the century. Churning out album after album of high-quality music, the band from Norway has honed and refined their formula for razor sharp death metal, with nary a misstep along the way. On December 5th, they’re back with their twelfth album, Siltskin, which will be a boon for longtime fans who can’t get enough of their bludgeoning sonic maelstrom.
While Blood Red Throne hails from Norway, their death metal has a distinctly Swedish quality. While their guitars may not lean quite so heavily on the HM2 buzzsaw tone, the overall feel of the music, the way they effortlessly blend melody and brutality, takes its cue from their neighbors to the east.
Muscular songs like Husk in the Grain and Vermicular Heritage show that Blood Red Throne hasn’t lost an ounce of fury or vitality as the band, comprised of guitarists Daniel ‘Død’ Olaisen and Ivan ‘Meathook’ Gujić, vocalist Sindre Wathne Johnsen, drummer Freddy Bolsø, and bassist Stian Gunderson continue to operate with the precision and conviction of a group far younger than their years.
Siltskin doesn’t reinvent Blood Red Throne so much as it reasserts their dominance. It’s an album forged from the same cold steel that’s kept them relevant for over two decades and will serve them well in the years to come.
