Review By: Rick Farley
In keeping with the black metal genres fiercely independent spirit, founding member Roman V. began Bizarrekult’s life as its sole mastermind in 2006 as a musical accompaniment to the poetic verses he’d written since childhood. Blending the grimness and energy of old school Norwegian black metal with flourishes of post metal ambience deftly sets the soundscapes range from blistering to ethereal and from raw to beautiful. Alt Som Finnes (“All There Is”) the bands third studio album swells and rages in an engaging struggle between pure darkness and sombre illumination. Wintery cold, melodic yet harsh, the airiness of softer passages on this record ensures your consciousness drifts in between atmospheric worlds freely while your body absorbs the brutality of its more aggressive nature.
Alt Som Finnes is an intense, modern black metal record with all the hellfire of the second wave trve, the progressiveness of differing ways to form its darkness and the painful, dissonant melancholy of balancing those extreme emotions with a touch of hope. The anger of Blikket Hennes with screechy, nasty vocals and searing tremolo guitars coinciding with a progressive forward moving stomp towards the end of the track complete with yearning, melodic, clean vocals spark the emotional impact of forcibly reacting with varying moods. The sombre clean guitars ringing out on Håp glimmers with melancholy and mystery. Clean vocals lead it to a crushing, doomy swampiness. The airy post chord changes ignite its expansive, depressive soundscape. The juxtaposition between clean fragility, heavy distortion, thick low end, and sickening harshness sound stunning yet terrifying together within the tracks deeply layered walls. The icy blackness from Drøm surges with snarling bite that is nothing short of pure old school black metal nastiness, only to shift itself to ethereal transcendence.
Bizarrekult’s overall musical range and ability to transform its emotions easily without interfering with its cohesiveness is next-level songwriting. The record is a masterclass in blending the old with the new in a believable, impactful way.
Alt Som Finnes was recorded at Seaside room. Produced, mixed, and mastered by Miguel Tereso at Demigod Recordings, Portugal. There is an honest feeling of organic life within this record not only in the way it’s written but also in the way it was produced. It’s rich, full, low ended and breathes a frosty savage breath when its angry and shimmers with glass like clarity when it’s melodic. Each element is crystal clear without sounding clinical. Guest spots on the record are Yusaf “Vicotnik” Parvez (Dødheimsgard) who does vocals on Blikket Hennes, Lina (Predatory Void) vocals on Drøm and Kim Song Sternkopf (MØL) on Tomhet. A shout-out to Gravestench Art for the sick cover.
At this point in the evolution of black metal Bizarrekult aren’t really doing anything new or more groundbreaking than what a lot of other post-black metal bands are doing but Alt Som Finnes is a genuine taste of their honesty and passion for the music they’re writing. You can feel that wholeheartedly in these songs, the pain, anger, and yearning are real, which is what sets them further apart from the run-of-the-mill post pack. This is a more than accomplished record that surely pleases any fan of the black metal genre rather easily and will undoubtedly stand the test of time. Easy recommend.
