Swedish death metal are three words in whatever language you speak that will forever be linked together. The three roll off the tongue, and when you hear them together, it’s the sound of perfection. You can debate all day where the hotbed of death metal is. Sweden, Finland and Florida all have a stake to that claim. And justifiably so, you can put all three at the very crux of it all. However, when it comes to consistency over the 4+ decades of this genre, Sweden will forever stand at the summit of this gigantic mountain.
Cryptorium follow the blueprint of those before them and add their own sick twist to the sound. With their sophomore release due out October 30, 2026, one can argue that Sweden is once again separating themselves from the back. Through the Bowels of Ceaseless Dissonance from Transcending Obscurity Records is a gritty and ambitious record.
If I may, over the years, Transcending Obscurity, per usual, has been one of the best and most true labels to date. They have released some of the best records from some of the most diverse and malevolent bands. When you see Transcending Obscurity’s name on a record, safe bet it’s an absolute tank of a record!
Save for the vocals, which I will go into in a few, Cryptorium is a filth-laden homage to the OG’s of the Swedish sound. Hyper tense blast beats and that oh-so-beautifully ugly and endearing chainsaw-grinding guitars make this a modern-day classic. With the exception of a few outliers, one does not expect to hear gutturals from a stereotypical Swedish death metal band. Most of the vocals have that same enigmatic grind that melds with the guitars. Cryptorium, however, offers a very distinct and sinister guttural that leaves the listener jaw-dropped. Truly awe-inspiring and filthy!
Through the Bowels of Ceaseless Dissonance is not a paint-by-numbers death metal record, but it’s also not reinventing the wheel. It’s a volatile slab of old school death metal that packs a ferocious punch. It’s everything a true death metal fan loves about the genre. The production is top tier, which gives it this raw and gritty delivery.
Rivers of Celestial Blood is hands down the standout track. In vein of the legendary Grave, this song is a vehement curb stomp. Bone crushing and angst laden, this violent and pissed-off song expresses the true art of death metal prowess. In Bitter Remorse follows rivers with a thick and dastardly beatdown. The riffs are enormous, the drums are relentless and the gutturals are a blood-soaked dance with the devil. The purest and most true death metal song I’ve heard in a long time!
Corpus Effigy defies the laws of heavy and delivers a blood splatter soundscape of death metal horror. Haunting and dissonant, with a forlorn intensity that speaks of being students of the genre.
I grew up on the Swedish death metal scene. If it had Sweden as a location I bought it. Nothing beats the big 4 of Sweden (Entombed, Dismember, Grave, Unleashed) and Cryptorium blends the best of each. Through the Bowels of Ceaseless Dissonance is a sure-fire death metal classic. Don’t miss it!!
