When I think of the choicest cuts of European death metal, my first instinct is to go to the Danish scene, because there are no stinkier variants out there. Swe-death is just not my favorite, and in general if my death metal doesn’t sound like the ooze in my local sewer gained sentience, then I’m going to be rather unimpressed. However, today’s review highlights a band from an area primarily known for the grooviest of goregrind or some rather top-shelf black metal. That’s right, we’re talking about Czechia: land of beer, bears, and Autopsy fans. Sněť exploded onto the scene back in 2021 with their debut Mokvání v okovech, and the most striking thing about them was how similar they sounded to their sewer-dwelling Danish counterparts, even doing a rather gross-sounding (positive) split with filthmongers Sequestrum before getting back to work. Now, though, sophomore record V bažinách vědomí emerges from the local fetid bog, and it’s exactly as stinky as it needs to be.
Roughly translated as “In the swamps of consciousness,” (thanks Google!) V bažinách vědomí begins with the lurching, unsteady Tíha světů that doesn’t take long to pummel you with fast, nasty riffs. The tones across V bažinách vědomí are fantastic, with the bass having a delicious rumbly quality not dissimilar from this year’s excellent Cryptworm record, most excellently shown on Nekončící koloběh snění a probouzení. When not writing some of the finest filth-laden riffs, the lead sounds on the entire record are downright infectious, all the while vocalist Řád Zdechlin gurgles and grunts truly vomitous passages. The added audio samples of flies buzzing (Natur, Moskyt) really add to the sheer stink factor that’s part of why V bažinách vědomí is so damn fun to listen to. Honestly, the biggest draw for V bažinách vědomí is that it’s just a fun, swampy sounding death metal album, and fun is oft ignored in favor of overly serious records. Heck, just this week I also reviewed the new Raphael Weinroth-Browne, and while I think that record is great, it’s clearly a more serious album rather than something you can just throw on and get your unga-bunga on, which is what V bažinách vědomí is.
V bažinách vědomí is a fantastic successor to Mokvání v okovech, and is up there as one of the better no-frills sewage-ridden death metal albums I’ve had the privilege of listening to this year. I doubt I’ll ever catch Sněť live as I do not live in Europe and touring in the US for foreign bands is hellaciously expensive, but I imagine they put on quite the show. V bažinách vědomí is absolutely something I’ll be coming back to a lot because this style of death metal when done right is absolutely the best in the game, and Sněť have really catapulted themselves to the top of the list of underground death metal bands to watch with this one. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go take a shower.
