Brutal death metal in and of itself is no holds barred, sheer brutality. But some bands add this technical side to it that just makes it outright intense! From a label that never lets us down, Willowtip, comes a record bleeding out the ears with complete ferociousness. The Pittsburgh based Vulgar Mephitis unload on all of our senses with their latest diabolic meat grinding symphonies From Dust! Fresh off the heels of their 2022 3 track EP debut comes a record that is jarring and dare I say violent!
Words can’t describe what your ears are hearing with this record. An audial onslaught burns a scar into your ear canal. The drums are out of this world. They never stop, and keep grating against your skin, rattling them from your mouth. The opening track From Dust, basically an intro does not even prepare you for what is to come. There’s a mild offsetting tone, with frenetic beats that almost soothe you, settling you down for what you would assume is a death metal ride. But then you are blown to smithereens when Martyr shakes you to the core. A blast beat laden, blood gurgling snarl of vocal, riff fest. The breakdown at the one minute mark is UNREAL!
If Martyr doesn’t move you, then Exterminating Profane, undoubtedly the best song on the record, should completely annihilate you. Jacob Toy’s vocals need to be studied. The range from the gritty highs, to the almost deathcore grumbling set this record apart from others in the genre. Exterminating Profane is a slugfest, with no decisive winner, just a mass of bloodied parts.
The opening of Scorn of my Flesh is a thick pile of maggot infested meat. It’s remarkably heavy with so much melody that you do a double take, but by the time you just figured out what the hell just happened to you, the ungodly ferocity of this band comes back and turns your brains to a festering liquid leaking from the ears.
This was my first listen to Vulgar Mephitis, and it was jaw dropping. The angst and malevolence of this record really grabbed me. The more extreme, the better for this guy here, and this record has all of it. All the boxes are checked; all you would expect from a band with vulgar in their name. Violent music, deadly riffs, Vulgar Mephitis.
