Frozen Soul has been one of the best pure American death metal bands to come out in the last decade. From their Maggot Stomp released debut EP, Encased in Ice, to their Century Media released full lengths, Crypt of Ice and Glacial Domination, Frozen Soul has consistently released top-tier, no BS death metal since 2019. Now they’re back with their latest, and possibly heaviest, album No Place for Warmth. Comprised of vocalist Chad Green, guitarists Michael Munday and Chris Bonner bassist Samantha Mobley, and drummer Matt Dennar, Frozen Soul channels the monolithic cold of a frozen world into their glacially heavy anthems of ice and death.

The first thing you’ll notice when you listen to No Place of Warmth is it’s definitely Frozen Soul. With the unmistakable growl of Green mixed with the razor-edged guitar attack of Munday and Bonner, the thundering heft of Mobley’s bass, and the punishing double bass assault of Dennar, this album couldn’t have been made by anyone else. The next thing you’ll notice is that the band seems to be bringing more of a hardcore influence to this record. Not that No Place of Warmth could ever be anything other than death metal, but this time around, songs like Invoke War and Chaos Will Reign feature behemoth breakdowns and an even more crushing, mid-paced chug that adds to the already colossal heaviness of the songs. Also adding to the overall heaviness of the album is the production, which is tremendous in its own right.

Fans of the band will find much to love on No Place of Warmth, but fans of death metal in general should give this album a try because its 36 minutes are packed with freezing fury and frigid fun. If death metal’s your thing, No Place of Warmth is for you.

4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)
