I love the fact that this is possibly the definition of not overstaying a welcome, committed to an audio format. 8 songs wrapped up inside 21 minutes says everything you really need to know about Wielded Steel and how they are going stomp you into the dust. This is a massive sounding record, I mean it just tears into you with nary a backwards glance. The accompanying press mentioned that they don’t consider themselves a metalcore band i.e. downtuned, elongated breakdowns and possible use of eyeliner, and it’s something you can believe as being an authentic statement. All you need to do is listen to Your Words Mean Nothing and In The Line Of Fire, two songs that just have something different to them. That hardcore zeal is there, most definitely but with that death approach added in.

However, once those two have blown through, and the rest follow on by, you are faced with the fact that all of these songs share a common thread that means they blur into each other. Let me point out that individually they are pretty decent, each one an exercise in brutality with no unnecessary fat found anywhere. It’s like a boxer who has trained themselves into peak condition and has just one job – to destroy.  This is what it does, and it does it well, but it doesn’t stop it from being more or less a collection of repeated ideas. In their favour is that unshakeable approach to make sure that each song is as violent as is possible, and that its over and done in a short order. They aren’t going to be lauded as bringing something new, but they should be championed as being honest, real and ready to lay down. Its refreshing that they don’t tell you how they are this or that, they let the music do the talking.
