Review By: Eric Wilt
Progressive metal is one of the most difficult genres for a new band to succeed in because the bar has been set so high by the groups that have come before. Bands like Dream Theater, Shadow Gallery, Symphony X, and Fates Warning have left new bands quite the daunting task to create something that will satisfy fans’ desire for virtuosic musicianship, multiple time signatures, and world-class singing all while making it palatable and not just showy for showys sake. Primaluce, the brainchild of Parisian musician Stefano Primaluce, is a current band that is up to the challenge. While not technically a new band, the bulk of music that Primaluce has created has just recently seen the light of day, with their most recent release being 2025’s standout Dark Mirrors. Now they are prepared to release Way of Perfection, their most complete and focused album to date.
Progressive metal fans enjoy hearing lots of notes being played, and Primaluce delivers on this front, but you can tell the songs are more important to the band than instrumental pyrotechnics. There are numerous places throughout the album where the musicians get to show off their skills, but everything feels balanced and in service to the song. On the other hand, Primaluce writes beautiful melodies that effortlessly move the compositions from section to section. Songs like the album opener The Wind Remains and Running Out of Yesterday perfectly show how Primaluce balances their heavy side with their virtuosic side with their melodic side and end up with songs that get in your head and won’t come out.
Dream Theater is the easy comparison here because Primaluce does have some Dream Theater influence in their DNA, but progressive rock bands like Spock’s Beard, Presto Ballet, and Enchant find their way into the mix as well. Ultimately, what you get with Primaluce is a band that knows where they are coming from but are forging their own path and doing it with grace and panache. Fans of emotional, progressive, melodic rock and metal will love everything that Primaluce is putting down. Without a doubt, Primaluce is the next big band in the prog world, Way of Perfection is easily the early front-runner for prog album of the year.
