I love black metal, if that wasn’t already obvious by what I’ve given high scores to on this site. Sanctvs is black metal, and it’s by none other than Xavier of Gevurah fame. Hallelujah, Gevurah’s debut, is one of my four favorite records ever made, so naturally when I saw there was a new Sanctvs coming, I eagerly picked it up. De l’Abîme au Plérôme is a much different beast than Gevurah, though, focusing less on the ritualistic mysticism and much more on an all out black metal assault, and the result is an addicting black metal album that’s one of the best 2026 currently has to offer.

See, what makes De l’Abîme au Plérôme stand out so much is the fact it gives us an opportunity to see that Xavier is not only a talented vocalist, drummer, and music engineer, but also an incredibly talented bassist and guitarist, most evidently by the single linked here, Sacrifié sur l’autel de la rédemption. There’s a clear homage to fellow Quebecois band Forteresse present throughout, and a lot of the songs on De l’Abîme au Plérôme are clearly influenced by other bands on the Sepulchral Productions label. However, how do they stand out on their own? Most black metal isn’t as bass-heavy as Sanctvs, and Xavier also demonstrates his wonderful vocal range throughout De l’Abîme au Plérôme, with the end result being a very regal yet evil sounding album. Thrène pour un monde révolu is my clear highlight though, adding a funereal atmosphere to the album and sounding eerily similar to a forgotten Gevurah track.

Sanctvs started off strong with Mors Aeterna, but De l’Abîme au Plérôme is a clear step-up in so many ways. Everything on here sounds bloody incredible, and I can’t emphasize enough how much I enjoy bass in my black metal. Sanctvs right now might still be relatively unknown, but there’s no way De l’Abîme au Plérôme won’t propel them into the ears of extreme metal fans. This year is already starting off strong, and this release Friday is only going to be stronger, so alongside all the other incredible records releasing this week, please do not skip Sanctvs, because there’s no better black metal in 2026 so far.
