What’s left to be said about a band whose 44 years into their celebrated careers, with 16 full lengths, numerous world tours and all the accolades any one band could handle. All deserved, mind you, Kreator helped put German thrash metal on the map while being forefathers of the genre that was just a little more raw, brutal, and faster than their Bay Area counterparts. Krushers of the World is more than an accumulation of their past, present and future, it’s a statement of their worth to the genre they helped build. Any thrash, black or even death metal bands that came out past Endless Pain or Pleasure to Kill owe Kreator a serious debt of gratitude. That’s what’s left to say.
Miland “Mille” Petrozza (lead vocals, rhythm guitar) and Jürgen “Ventor” Reil (drums) are the only two original members left standing, which is the sole foundation of Kreator. Joined by Sami Yli-Sirniö (lead guitarist, backing vocals) in 2001 and Frédéric Leclercq (bass, backing vocals) in 2019 the band has remained mostly steady for a considerable amount of time. Now so many years later the band could easily get a free pass if they were to rest on their laurels and just release the standard thrash metal their known for, but that’s not the case here, this in essence is an up to date, ferocious continuation of their metal dominance, while still looking towards the future and that’s honestly all it really needs to be.
Krushers of the World brings more raging fire, fierce melody, anthemic hooks and sharper production than its predecessor Hate Über Alles. It feels like a shot to the teeth from the classic, old school energy while still being modernized Kreator by adding additional melo-death/power metal flourishes. Now I do realize that the old heads, even though I am one of them, will probably bitch and moan about some of the choruses on this record, but the record brings the violence just as harshly as they ever have. Honestly what more can you ask for from a legacy band, Mille’s voice is still as badass as ever, Ventor is still one of the best thrash drummers around, Sami’s guitar solos shred with snakebite accuracy and the guitar riffs, my god the riffs. So brutal, melodic, and undeniably hell raising.
Need proof, opener Seven Serpents starts with an anthemic lead melody that feels like it’s leading the listener to the heavens but becomes an onslaught of death and violence, Teutonic thrash metal style. Bits of melo-death vibe give it a snarling bite. A furious, crushing track with a huge chorus and tons of melody that’s bound to raise horns and pump fists.
Tränenpalast, a darkened blistering track influenced by Dario Argento’s Susperia which features the brutal growls of Britta Görtz (Hiraes) is a dose of blackened, atmospheric menace. Face melting, Barbarian is a straight-up call back to the bands glory days of punishing aggression, while album closer Loyal to the Grave is a triumphant sword wielding shot of thrashy power metal that’s impossible not to headbang to. Regardless of where your fanhood lies with Kreator, there isn’t a lot to complain about here. Vicious energy, merciless guitar riffs, killer drum work with hooky songs and shredding solos, do you really need more than that? Legends.
Produced by Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studios, Krushers of the World sounds crisp, nasty, and utterly massive. Special shoutout to Zbigneiw Bielak for the insanely impressive cover art.
