Review By: Mark Young

Anti-Sapien return with At The Mercy Of The Merciless, a 6 track EP that starts in a crushing manner and then stays there until the last moments of the final song. Old Drugs starts up by channelling Slayer’s Here Comes The Pain, which could be considered a homage. In any event, any abuse of whammy bars is purely coincidental. It’s murky, with a pedalling riff that forms the base. Blasts come forth in just the right places and credit to the vocal combo of Blake and Ryan with lead vocals from Blake being suitably grim, impenetrable which is just what you want from your death metal. It’s a decent start, one that is further pushed by Eater of Ghosts, which keeps that grim approach in place. The stage set on track 1 doesn’t really alter, it’s solid with an arrangement that shows that they can write material that drips with grime and filth. D.E.A.D. breaks out the leads and a frantic closing pace but stays within its lane, established by Old Drugs. And so on, and so on. The remaining songs come and go, each one as good as the one before without really grabbing me, and it leads me to think I’m wanting too much from it. I’m probably overthinking this review, and as a result, actually getting the words down is positively torturous. It’s gotten to a point that sometimes I forget that not all bands are trying to change the world with their latest offering, sometimes they just want you to hear it because it means something to them. Once I got that in place, my opinion on the songs changed in terms of this review.

Each of the songs do what they need to do – be heavy, be brutal, have riffs. That’s it really, and on this they succeed. Are they earth-shattering? No, but then I don’t think they are expected to be. They are presented as death metal for people who like death metal. That’s it, nothing else.

From a ‘reviewing’ perspective, I found that the songs were good, but only that. They didn’t go any further than that, and maybe you should approach with caution. I revisited it from a fan’s perspective and found that I enjoyed them a lot more, because they did what they were supposed to do. As I understand it, their line-up has stabilised ahead of this release so it will be interesting to see how they progress next.
