New year, new metal. Historically, January has been a rather slow time of year, but this year it bucks that trend, with a few fairly strong releases already out and making their presences known. Ellende, Polaris Experience, and Enshine are examples of this, but I feel it’s high time for some death metal to make a splash. That’s where Oraculum comes in. With a few EPs under their belt, it was high time for these Chilean deathmongers to release their debut LP. Thankfully, the wait is over, and Hybris Divina is a ridiculously strong first full-length. The Chilean effect strikes again, because it seems like 98% of albums that get released from that corner of the world have a certain sauce that other scenes of metal just cannot seem to replicate.
Sonically, Oraculum is big, it’s mean, and it’s fairly dense. While many of the Chilean bands take note from the Death-aspect of progressive death metal, Oraculum adds in a dash of Bolt Thrower and Asphyx to create a particularly bludgeoning blend of barbarous brutality. The instrumentation on this is fantastic, veering between massive riffs and completely bonkers solos, most notably in Spiritual Virility, which goes completely insane by the end. The shorter tracks, which would normally be indicative of intros or more unnecessary tracks, aren’t unnecessary at all, and both let the guitars shine in slow, deliberate leads as a brief intermission before it’s back to full-on pummeling. Hybris Divina is exactly the kind of death metal I wanted to start the year off, and while I knew I would enjoy it because it’s Chilean, I didn’t realize it would make such a strong splash. This is that good old-fashioned sound you come to expect from the scene, and Hybris Divina is a blast to listen to again and again.
Oraculum have already made a case for a strong 2026 contender, and while I can’t say if it will be topping any lists at the end of the year, especially with the absolute monsters that are likely releasing this year, I can confidently say that Oraculum’s debut is a must-listen for anyone who just wants some good death metal. Personally, I greatly enjoy this, and will be coming back to this time and again throughout the rest of the year. I’m excited to see what the rest of January brings, because if this record is any indication, we’re going to have a strong 2026.
