Review By: Paul Cairney

The main influence behind Polish death/black metal outfit, Bläkken is undeniable. Światowstręt sounds like a homage to fellow Poles, Behemoth in every positive way possible.

Most of the tracks have the vocals in their native language. This provides Światowstręt with the authenticity that is often missing from black metal bands. The language allows the guttural vocals to berate the listener as the band rattle along. A brief intro leads into the immediate ‘Słowa Zatrute Goryczą’, with its marching riff and threatening nature that spreads into a gallop. A promising start.

Tonally, Bläkken also impress. They have a heady blend of heaviness interspersed with a deep atmosphere that envelopes the listener. Merging a death and black metal tone can be a challenge, especially when it is self-released. Światowstręt gets the balance right, it has a decent production that doesn’t compromise your enjoyment.

The unfortunate thing about the album is the length. It is just shy of an hour long and, to be fair, it doesn’t need to be. A couple of tracks could be shaved off, and the album would benefit from it. That said, sometimes you just have to accept it and let the neck muscles strain, as they will with ‘Labirynt’ and ‘Wściekłość’, a song with a relentless nature that hunts you down like a mangy dog.

It is hard to be too critical of Bläkken. They have written an album that is ultimately highly enjoyable, with an innate heaviness and tone that will impress the most hardened metalhead.

This is worth your time.
