I read recently that something like a hundred thousand new music tracks are uploaded to streaming services every day. While it’s safe to assume only a fraction of those would interest a discerning fan of metal, there’s no denying we’re buried under an avalanche of new music. For a band to stand out now, they have to do more than just regurgitate the same heavy metal tropes that have been recycled since Black Sabbath forged the genre in the late ’60s. VoidCeremony is one of those rare bands still intent on pushing metal’s boundaries outward instead of polishing its old armor.
On their third full-length, Abditum, VoidCeremony continues to carve out their own unique corner of the death metal world. The band’s sound is a dense tangle of sludgy weight and technical intricacy, at times angular, at others pummeling. Riff after riff comes at the listener in a swirl of notes, while the drums pound life into each track.
Abditum is not intended to be background music. Instead, the band forces the listener’s undivided attention as each track unfolds like map of the night sky. Fans of technical death metal will find much to admire, even after numerous listens to Abditum. In a world drowning in disposable releases, VoidCeremony proves that innovative death metal is still being created.
