Let me introduce you to “The Red Garden,” the upcoming second EP from emerging heavy rock band Freeze the Fall, who hail from Kelowna in British Columbia. Freeze the Fall is Quinn Mitzel (guitar & vocals), Aria Becker (bass & backup vocals) and Jonah Goncalves (drums).
Known for their introspective and gritty modern rock sound where they seamlessly merge Hard Rock, Nu-Metal and Metalcore this Canadian trio are eager to take their music to yet another level. Does “The Red Garden” allow Freeze the Fall to nurture and realise those ambitions, let’s find out!
Instrumental opener “Denial” heightens the anticipation before the “Rot” sets in, which in this case is a hard riffing track with a lovely 90s feel to it. The vocal harmonies meld wonderfully with a very high impact tune that has more than enough X factor to make you sit up and take heed. We are off to a great start!
Melancholy slow burner “Hypothermia” is as its name suggests an absolute killer of a track with a deep rumbling bass sound that once again is amply supported by some divine vocal harmonies, some jaw dropping high notes being hit to perfection add a little bling. A little darker and a touch gothic too, “VHS” hits doubly hard with a superb chain sawing riff that simply cuts you up into small pieces and spits you out at the end. No quarter given, and none taken!
Percussion fest “Aurora” beats a path directly into your psyche with an intimidating and pounding menace to it. Complimented by a kind of retro meets modern feel, you can almost see the sparks fly and feel the heat in this corker. The sensationally sorrowful “Oubliette” is an absolute peach of a song, a thing of natural and outstanding beauty. If you have a pulse, the wheeping guitars and emotionally charged vocals cannot fail to move you. This gets better and better!
Following in a similar vein, curtain closer and strikingly sensual ballad “Lace” keeps those floodgates gaping open, allowing those melancholy tears to keep flowing unabated. The piano/vocal combo is to absolutely die for as your heart strings are tugged gently but firmly along the way. A gorgeous strings arrangement then builds up the atmosphere further, bringing the song to a satisfying climax that will leave you wanting more, much more!
Freeze the Fall have an undoubtedly very bright future ahead of them, in fact I would say they will probably be a huge act on the world stage in the not-too-distant future. “The Red Garden” ticks every single box that you would expect from a modern metal EP and then maybe some others you haven’t thought of yet too! The six main tracks all stand up to individual scrutiny by having wide-ranging appeal to the modern audience, so in answer to my earlier question about nurturing and realizing their ambitions, it simply must be a resounding YES!
Very highly recommended!
