Hailing from Turin, Italy, exciting all female metal band Hellfox are just about to unleash their sophomore album “The Spectrum of Human Gravity” on the world. Following on from their debut, 2022’s “The Call” relative newcomers Hellfox are already proving themselves as a major force in the genre with both fans and critics alike praising their work. Hellfox skilfully paint their very own unique canvas by carefully weaving together threads of melodic death metal with strands of alternative metal into an addictive elixir that will have you completely hooked from the very first note to the last!
There are no symphonic elements here, “The Spectrum of Human Gravity” is just good old-fashioned heavy metal riffs beautifully crafted together with the more modern sound of acid and distorted synthesisers. Hellfox then pep up the mix further, enhancing it by introducing a new spin on the obligatory opposing vocal powers from the growler and melodic camps in a red-hot sparring match that rivals the very best on offer from the others out there.
Hellfox is Greta Hammonia Antico (vocals), Priscilla Poe Foresti (bass and vocals), Gloria Naflekt Kaps (guitars) and Federica Fedi Piscopo (drums).
Opening track “Nautilus -Seaweed Braids” whets your appetite right from the start, with its humble acoustic beginnings gradually morphing into a fabulous fusion sandwiched somewhere between futuristic and more traditional/folk elements. The blacker and bleaker “Empty” is a heavenly heavy and heart meltingly melancholy offering for those of you who maybe like me love to wallow in a bit of woe.
Thumping track “Water on the Ceiling” is both brutal and beautiful at times with its hauntingly choral vocals ensnaring your soul before holding it captive to the finish, love it! The gothic graveyard riff of “Pareidolia” hangs in your mind like an eerie cemetery mist, taunting and teasing you with its creepy aura. Gorgeously grim!
With a much more upbeat ambience, “Atlas” has a defter touch and quicker tempo to it, tempting you with a slither of light, a brief brighter interlude with an almost pop metal feel about it before the darkness descends once more. Next up and poles apart, “Six Times Lighter” is a hard-hitting slow burner where the intensity and tension steadily ratchets up for the duration of the song, taking you right to the very edge of the precipice before pulling you back.
The deeper hollow bass and muffled guitar of “The Centipede” cranks up the heat and pressure once again, some wonderful witchy vocals begin to cast an increasingly intoxicating spell over the listener, leaving you yearning for more.
Penultimate tune and classic metal tale “The Warrior, The Child, The Healer” is an epic rock album style track, an outstanding composition that unashamedly issues a very bold and crystal-clear statement for those that don’t already know that Hellfox are most assuredly a band to watch out for in the future. A cappella closing track “Voices” then gently lowers the curtains and brings our enjoyable journey to an end.
If you haven’t already heard of Hellfox or checked out any of their music yet, then you simply don’t know what you have been missing, and you need to remedy that situation immediately! “The Spectrum of Human Gravity” by Hellfox really is one hell of an album, so don’t let this coming 6th June be your longest day, instead make sure you add it to your playlist as soon as it drops. You can thank me later!
